The illustrated castle. This is the most common name for Castel Roncolo, an elegant mediaeval castle that, from the high crag where it lies, overlooks the city of Bozen in South Tyrol. Great part of its fame comes from its many frescoes about mediaeval times. Many tourists coming in South Tyrol visit Castel Roncolo, known in German as Schloss Runkelstein.
Both the Jewish Museum and the synagogue in Merano in South Tyrol are precious witness of the Jewish presence in Merano and its history. Many Jewish families and singles started to reach Merano in 1832. Jewish settled down in Merano and in the surrounding area in precise times and conditions, with clear reasons. It all started in the second half of the nineteenth century, as many Jews from Hohenems, not far away from Lake Constance, moved to the southern part of Tyrol, after gaining permit of stay.
It is not easy to resist the charm of the wine road in South Tyrol. This route, from Nalles to Salorno, offers the indisputable pleasure of a magic pathway from the banks of the Adige River to the lowest part of Tyrol. The wine road in South Tyrol is an enchanting route of about 70 kilometres across many interesting places in South Tyrol. Designed in1964, the wine road in South Tyrol is one of the oldest itineraries in this area.
If Marmolada is considered the Queen of Dolomites, Sass Pordoi is known as the terrace on the Dolomites. Such name actually comes from its peculiar shape. Sass Pordoi offers a 360 degree view of the most beautiful peaks of the Dolomites such as Sassolungo, Marmolada, Pale di San Martino, Conca d’Ampezzo, all the way to Cevedale, Ortles and the Swiss and Austrian Alps.
The route around the Sella Dolomites, between the Livinallongo, Val di Fassa valley, Gardena and Badia valley is known as Sellaronda, an itinerary for hiking, cycling and skiing, thanks to its modern skilifts and slopes. Those willing to travel the entire Sellaronda will have the possibility to walk across Pass Sella at 2,240 meters, il Pass Pordoi at 2,239 meters, Pass Campolongo, 1,875 meters and Pass Gardena, at 2,121 meters of height.
